May 23rd, 2003. A
BBC news item commented upon the first annual report of the register. "Just 30 children have been successfully adopted through the government's new

Comments from our Chief Executive, Kevin Jones.
"For some the National Register is about the number of viable adoption matches that are suggested and the number of adoptions that actually take place. We
have never felt that the register would be a very effective tool if judged in this way. The greatest value of the Register is the ability to provide a national picture of adoption. We will
know far more about the children who need to be placed for adoption, and more about the prospective adopters available. It may be an expensive way to gather this data but at least it is being done."
